FLUORESCENT THIN SECTIONS TO OBSERVE THE FRACTURE ZONE IN MORTAR
There have been relatively few studies of the microstructural details of the fracture zone of propagating cracks in mortars and concretes. The lack of information about the details has hindered the development and validation of fracture mechanics theories based on the micromechanisms of cracking. This report deals with the use of fluorescent thin sections to observe the microstructural details of the fracture zone. A mortar is used to illustrate the technique. It is concluded that the fluorescent thin section technique has the potential of providing a valuable new source of information on the microstructural details of the fracture zone in mortars and concretes, both near the surface and in the interior of specimens.
