TRANSPORTATION PLANNING IN THE BOSTON METROPOLITAN AREA: A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY, 1930-1982

The object of this bibliography is to provide planners and students of the history of transportation planning, for the first time, with a reference that consolidates sources on all modes of transportation and their development in the Boston metropolitan area. The starting date of 1930 has been chosen because it seems to represent a watershed in the city's history. This bibliography is intended as a starting point for those desiring to understand what early plans were made, how they were implemented and evaluated and how today Boston, as a major urban area, is striving to address current and future transportation needs. The bibliography is divided into five major categories: General, Highway, Transit, Water, and Air. Each section begins with a short introduction, and the citations follow in chronological order (to facilitate understanding the historical development of planning policy). Brief appendices provide a list of acronyms, descriptions of major planning projects, and a list of libraries in which the documents cited may be located. For the most part, materials included are monographs and state, regional, and local government documents. No periodical or newspaper articles have been included unless they have been reprinted as distinct documents. In those few instances when the general focus of a publication is not self-evident, a brief annotation has been added. (Author)
