BUS MAINTENANCE FACILITY VALUE ENGINEERING STUDY. GREATER BRIDGEPORT TRANSIT DISTRICT
The Value Engineering Study was conducted for the Bridgeport Bus Maintenance, Storage and Operations facility as it has been planned by an architectural/engineering organization. A professional engineer and a VE team examined this project which covered 2 buildings on a 6.5 acre site. The goal was to obtain the greatest value for a limited construction budget, yet meet all the requirements for quality, performance, maintainability, safety and reliability. There was a review of all criteria, plans, specifications, design analysis, cost estimates and other information. Alternative designs were proposed for achieving the required functions at lowest overall cost consistent with performance requirements for structures, siting, site development and other factors. High costs were isolated, including life-cycle costs, and anticipated construction time and conservation of energy were considered. Greater Bridgeport Transit District immediately accepted 8 alternatives estimated to save about $950,000 in first costs and $1.6 million in estimated life cycle savings. Four other design alternatives were estimated to save $500,000 in first costs and comparable life-cycle costs. These last 4 were still being considered by GBTD.
