PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION ON A HYDROFOIL WITH POD AND STRUT NEAR THE FREE SURFACE
A method is given for calculating the pressure distribution on a hydrofoil with pod and strut. The foil planform can be arbitrary in shape, but must be essentially contained in a horizontal plane so that all points are at the same depth; the strut is assumed to be a constant symmetric section without taper or sweep; the pod is assumed to be a circular section with its center line at the junction of the foil and strut. The technique is an extension of that developed for a foil alone (ERA 53-3). The combined foil-strut-pod system is represented by a source and vortex sheet distribution over the plane of the hydrofoil--a source sheet in the plane of the symmetric strut extending from the pod center line to the free surface--a source and vortex line along the pod center line. A program to calculate the lift and pressure distribution has been written for the IBM 3-60/65 (ERA 53-6). Sample calculations have been given for two configurations. (Author)
