TRANSPORT STATISTICS 14TH ED 1983

Sections are included on: transport and the economy, road finance, road network, vehicle statistics, road accident data, rail transport, harbours, air transport, road transportation of goods and passengers. Some information is also given for Zimbabwe, South West Africa/Namibia, Transkei/Bophuthatswana/Venda. It is shown that the transport sector accounts for more than seven per cent of the country's gross domestic product as well as more than seven per cent of all employment. An indication is also given of changes in the price level of some key indicators in transportation, including vehicle running costs and fuel costs. Road accident and casualty figures for 1982 showed an increase over the level in 1981. The resource cost of accidents is approximately r1500 million per annum. (TRRL)
