STRESS ANALYSIS OF BITUMINOUS SURFACED STEEL BRIDGE DECKS. FINAL REPORT

A theoretical study of the stresses occurring in a surfaced steel plate is presented. The results are compared with those obtained experimentally, in order to determine the stiffness moduli for the surfacing material. Shear deformation in the surfacing material and high shear strains at the steel/asphalt interface are accounted for in the partially composite analysis. Composite stiffness moduli are determined for use in a shell/plate finite element analysis of a surfaced orthotropic steel deck with eccentric stiffeners. Evidence has been provided for improving the fatigue performance of mastic asphalt by altering the binder content and viscosity of the standard mix. (TRRL)
