DEVELOPMENT OF A SURFACE APPLIED FIBRE OPTIC MONITORING. FINAL REPORT

The project reported deals with the problem of detecting, by means of optical fibre sensors, crack growth on concrete and steel bridge type test specimens undergoing static and fatigue loadings. The range of minimum crack width detection was determined for cracks appearing in the surface of concrete beams, and for fatigue cracks growing a) from the toes of fillet welds, b) along butt welds, and c) on longitudinal stiffeners. The objective of the project was to develop an essentially laboratory-based prototype device into a reliable and rugged system which can be used indefinitely on bridges continuously carrying heavy traffic. This project was carried out for the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, Crowthorne, Berkshire. (TRRL)
