DELINEATION AT NIGHT
DE GELEIDINGSFUNKTIE VAN MARKERINGSGEOMETRIEEN BIJ NACHT
The short-range and long-range information presentation of different delineation geometries is investigated for wet road conditions at night. Configurations of raised pavement markers, post-mounted delineators and their combinations, and stripes on straight roads and curves having radii of 1000 m and 200 m are studied by an analysis of driver's observation and control strategy. The research findings recommend the necessity of using delineation devices at both sides of the traffic lane by the implementation of profiled stripes, raised pavement markers at the location of the centre and shoulder lines, or post-mounted delineators just beside the lane. Post-mounted delineators on larger cross distances are less effective. The longitudinal spacing between the raised pavement markers should be no greater than 12 m for curves with radii of 200 m and 24 m for straight roads. (TRRL)
