CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES AND PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE

This report sets out the methodology used to record and assess the construction activities carried out on the basecourse (pavement) layer of a residential street. Recording was carried out by video filming. Field measurements and sampling were carried out for material and pavement layer properties, with laboratory testing performed as required. A statistical approach was used to interpret the data obtained. A number of hypotheses were tested, in which an attempt was made to relate construction practices to the parameters of the completed pavement layer. During the course of the project, it became apparent that the video equipment, although an excellent means for recording construction operations, was not sufficiently sensitive to undertake the precise measurements anticipated when the project objectives were first formulated. With the exception of this particular aspect, all other objectives were achieved. (Author/TRRL)
