TRANSIT WORKS: 10 RURAL CASE STUDIES

This report describes ten public transportation systems in small urban and rural areas. The systems cover individual cities, counties or multicounty regions, or entire states. Each case study begins with a brief summary of system characteristics, problems, and strengths, and then covers management and organization, types of operations, ridership, revenues and expenses, and finances. All ten systems examined tailored their services to the communities they serve, change in response to evolving needs and conditions, and have succeeded in getting strong local support. The study also notes that for these systems public information and community outreach approaches are more effective than standard advertising and promotion. The report is written in nontechnical language, and should be especially interesting to decision-makers in small communities.
