AN IMPACT ANALYSIS OF THE OPENING OF THE QUINCY ADAMS RAPID--TRANSIT STATION
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) opened the Quincy Adams Station, a rail rapid transit station on the South Shore Extension of the Red Line, on September 10, 1983. The purpose of this study is to assess the impacts of the new station on traffic patterns and travel habits in the South Shore Corridor. Data on transit ridership and the use of parking facilities at corridor transit stations were collected before and after the new station opened and are compared in this report. Survey data which describes the passengers' socioeconomic characteristics and perception of the quality of the transit service received are also analyzed in this report. The passenger survey conducted at five South Shore transit stations on February 29, 1984, indicated that:11 percent of these passengers were new riders; 51 percent did not make the trip before; 92 percent of surveyed trips (morning peak) were work trips; 89 percent of all trips had destinations in Boston; and the most common mode of access to Quincy Adams Station was auto (80 percent were park and ride and 10 percent were kiss and ride). The most cited reason for using the Red Line was the negative aspects of driving rather than the benefits of using public transportation. The study also reports a significant increase in daily traffic volumes on segments of streets near Quincy Adams Stations.
