SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS' FUNCTION AND ACCIDENT RISK FOR UNPROTECTED ROAD USERS. PART I: CYCLISTS

SIGNALREGLERADE KORSNINGARS FUNKTION OCH OLYCKSRISK FOER OSKYDDADE TRAFIKANTER. DEL I: CYKLISTER

The aim of the project was to study the unprotected road users' risk and change in behaviour, partly when installing a signal at an intersection, and partly when using various functions in signal techniques and geometric designs in signalized four-way intersections. This part of the report deals with cyclists only. Various types of study have been made. These can be classified into 3 main groups: delay studies, behaviour studies and risk studies. The studies were made at two different types of intersection before and after these were signalized, and also on 28 different signalized road approaches with varying signal functions and geometric designs. The introduction of signals increased the travel time through the intersection for all traffic categories. The increase for motor vehicles was measured as being between 30 and 120 per cent depending on which approach was studied. The lower value concerns approaches where the vehicles "had difficulties in getting away" before signals were installed. Corresponding increase for cyclists was measured as being between 16 and 75 per cent. (Author/TRRL)
