TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL AT A FOUR-WAY INTERSECTION IN HIGH SPEED SURROUNDINGS. FORECAST STRATEGY

PROGNOSSTRATEGI FOER SIGNALREGLERING I HOEGHASTIGHETSKORSNINGAR

The object of the forecast strategy is to minimize the total delays for vehicles passing through a traffic signal controlled intersection while at the same time not allowing the individual waiting time to exceed 90 seconds. The aim of the new control strategy is to try to minimize the nuisance to main road transit traffic when the intersection had traffic signals installed. The aim is to affect other traffic flows as slightly as possible. In the investigation a simulated model has been built of the four-way-intersection in high speed surroundings. The model is a computer based model in the program language FORTRAN. The model has been tested on a number of different combinations of flows on the main road and on the access road. During the tests of flow combinations, the proportion of vehicles turning off and the proportion of vehicles in column on the main road have been varied. Furthermore, a factor of error has been used in the predicting model to see whether the efficiency of the forecast strategy has been affected by the error in the forecast. The result from the investigation indicates that the forecast strategy, compared with the direct strategy, gives quite a lower average delay. (TRRL)
