CREEP AND SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE - SIZE AND AGE OF LOADING EFFECTS
The creep and shrinkage behaviour of plain concrete in a constant environment of 20 degrees c and 60% relative humidity, is studied. For the size and shape tests, specimens were of five sizes of square prisms with cross section ranging from 100 by 100mm to 400 by 400mm, five sizes of simulated slabs ranging from 100 to 400mm thick, and 150 by 150mm cross section sealed prisms. In the age at loading tests, 150 by 150 by 600mm prisms, simulated slabs, and sealed prisms, were loaded at ages of 8, 14, 21, 28, 84 and 182 days. An additional set of shrinkage tests of square prisms, simulated slabs and cubes is described. The concrete used was a typical bridge building concrete of normally 40 mpa strength. Experimental strains were monitored for 6 years, and results are compared with theoretical predictions. (TRRL)
