A NOTE ON POSTBUCKLING BEHAVIOR OF PRESSURIZED SHALLOW SPHERICAL SHELLS
In this note the initial postbuckling behavior of a uniform shallow spherical shell subject to uniform external pressure loading is determined on the basis of an asymptotic analysis of the differential equations for finite deflections of shallow spherical shells. The same subject has previously been considered by Hutchinson on the basis of Koiter's general theory of post-buckling behavior. The present alternate approach suggested itself to the author in the course of studying Hutchinson's paper. A point of particular interest in the present derivation would seem to be that the consequences of certain orthogonality relations in Koiter's procedure appear here as a consequence of a requirement of the nonappearance of secular terms in the parametric expansion of the postbuckling solution of the problem.
