STUDIES ON FLUIDIZED BED INCINERATION AND PYROLYSIS OF SHIPBOARD WASTES

Incineration and pyrolysis in a fluidized bed reactor have been studied as a way to treat shipboard generated waste. The study was carried out in a 9-in.-dia Fluidhearth reactor by AWT Systems, Inc. The work included methods of feed preparation and feeder design, as well as feeder selection. Experiments were made to indicate the virtue of top versus bottom feed, as well as simultaneous liquid and solid feed. Off-gas analysis was used to help regulate either the incineration or pyrolysis process, while attempts were made to maximize the rate of destruction of wastes. Attempts were made to minimize fuel utilization by running under autogenic conditions or with energy rich feeds. Observations were made on the disintegration of solids added at two locations in the fluidized bed reactor. In addition, data were obtained on cyclone and Venturi scrubber effluent. The quality of the scrubber effluent was dependent on the temperature and whether the waste destruction was done by incineration or pyrolysis. Incineration of ground solids, fed to the bottom of the fluidized bed, provided the best combination of destruction rate, energy utilization, and scrubber effluent quality.
