THE MALMOE STUDY: A CALIBRATION OF TRAFFIC CONFLICT TECHNIQUES
In the summer of 1983 a unique experiment took place in Malmoe a calibration study of eight different conflict techniques. The week before this experiment an international meeting in Copenhagen was organised in order to show a broader audience the detailed information concerning each applied conflict technique in the Malmoe study. The report presented here is intended to record the results and the achievements of the Malmoe calibration study. The first chapter gives a brief background on the development of conflict techniques and explains why a calibration study was needed. Chapter 2 sets out the field work plan, together with short descriptions of the techniques used. Chapter 3 gives the results of the statistical analysis of the data. It presents and discusses the results in detail, but its final section gives a short and non-technical summary of the analysis. Chapter 4 takes a broader view of the results, and reflects the fact that a conflict study consists not only of data collection, but also the interpretation of that data in the diagnosis of safety problems. Finally, chapter 5 sums up the results and conclusions, and looks to the future. The results of the Malmoe calibration study were also presented during the fourth international ictct workshop in Leuven, Belgium, in September 1984. Proceedings of this meeting are also being published. (TRRL)
