TRAFFIC EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
VERKEERSEDUCATIEPROGRAMMA VOOR KLEUTERS
Previous studies have resulted in the development of the Preschool Education in Traffic (PET) programme, which can be carried out by parents of young children in co-operation with the kindergarten school. The results of the experiments indicated that parents are capable of implementing the programme and are successful in improving their children's road crossing behaviour. In this study the programme was presented under operational conditions to parents and kindergarten schools in order to investigate the willingness of parents and teachers to participate in the programme and to investigate the nature of their educational activities within the programme. On the basis of the results of previous experiments the programme was redesigned to make it suitable for operational usage; for the parents an information booklet and an instructional film were produced as well as observation forms for use during the practice sessions in traffic. In addition audio-visual aids and printed materials were produced for use in the classroom. (TRRL)
