HYDROGEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS FOR LEACHATE REDUCTION AT LANDFILL SITES
HYDROGEOLOGISKA FOERUTSAETTNINGAR FOER REDUKTION AV LAKVATTENBILDNING VID AVFALLSUPPLAG
The report presents a theoretical study of the conditions which govern leachate production. The theoretical part is supported and illustrated by results from an on-going field study. In principle, the following parts of the production process has been studied: (1) the amount of water available for infiltration. Distribution in time and intensity; (2) the water content in the uppermost part of the deposit including covering and sealing layers. Distribution with time and saturation; (3) the hydraulic conductivity of covering and sealing layers; (4) the lateral water flow in the deposit. The study shows that natural soil types, normally available, have such a high infiltration capacity, that any significant sealing effect is not achieved. It is only possible to reduce the infiltration at periods with intense precipitation or rapid snow-melt, and then only the peaks in the leachate production. Nevertheless, the sealing and covering layers on top of a deposit are of great importance as water reservoirs for the evapotranspiration. This effect is even more accentuated, when the land-fill is covered with vegetation, which may increase the annual water losses by a few hundred mm. (Author/TRRL)
