AUTOMATIC JOURNEY TIME - SPOT SPEED DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM

The object of this system is to collect data for the construction of spot speed contour plots as a function of time of day and distance along a freeway section. These contour plots can be used as a diagnostic tool to identify recurrent congestion and bottlenecks. A transducer converts distance travelled into electric pulses. Timing is supplied by an electronic clock housed in a portable battery-operated microcomputer-based logging instrument. The data are first stored in memory, then written onto cassette tape. In turn, cassettes are read into a mainframe computer where suitable programs generate contour plots. The logging instrument described can also be used for the automatic collection of traffic parameters by means of inductive loops. (Author/TRRL)
