THE ACCURACY AND ESTIMATION OF ANNUAL TRAFFIC FLOW

Many new demands are being placed on traffic counts as a source of data for transport planning, traffic management, road engineering, etc. An estimate of annual flow, based on a short-period count, is usually used and it is assumed that this estimate is sufficiently accurate. However, the reliability of the estimate is usually unknown. The purpose of this manual is to provide quick reference tables showing the counting duration required to yield traffic estimates of a given level of accuracy. It is hoped that this will enable most requirements for traffic count data to be met efficiently and effectively, and will indicate that a traffic flow estimate is not an absolute figure, but one which lies within a range of likely values.
