FINANCIAL ANALYSIS CAN REDUCE TRANSPORT COSTS: THE CHOICE OF FUELS AND FUEL SAVING DEVICES

Cost effective investment in commercial vehicle options requires a complex financial analysis. The multiple factors of fuel consumption and price, inflation, taxation deductions, loss on resale and differential lubrication costs are included in the evaluation. The annual capital charges that must be recovered through fuel saving have been determined as a fraction of the incremental investment for differing length of ownership. A simple payback understates the annual capital costs by 25 per cent at 5 years. Basic rules have been derived from the analyses to assist buyers. Guidance is given for model to model and within model evaluations. The replacement of diesel (or petrol) with LPG in the heavy duty truck and light commercial vehicles is analysed in detail.
