RISK FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF THE MOTORCYCLE AS AN ENFORCEMENT VEHICLE

This survey, national in scope, attempted to evaluate the use of the police motorcycle by police departments in the United States in respect to: the extent of use of the police motorcycle as an enforcement vehicle, the risk involved in such use as related to accidents and injuries, the severity of these injuries, and the preventability of these injuries. For this survey, the police motorcycle is defined as a motorcycle which has two wheels, a displacement of 500 cc or more, and is used by law enforcement agencies for a law enforcement function. From the results of this national survey, we have provided the reader with an executive summary and a detailed analysis of the responses. The analysis is followed by a list of key findings. There is also a listing of police departments in the United States who are using police motorcycles. (Author)
