PROTECTING THE INTEGRITY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION'S TRUCK SAFETY AUDITS
This publication is a transcript of a hearing before the Government Activities and Transportation Subcommittee of the House Committee on Government Operations. During the hearing three allegations were made: the Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety does not adequately respond to whistleblowers' allegations of truck safety violations; it has not procedures for reacting to questioned safety audits; and it has no procedures for sampling or otherwise monitoring its enforcement personnel to detect shoddy or intentionally misdirected audits. Testimony was given by representative of the Department of Transportation and the General Accounting Office, as well as a private citizen detailing his experiences with the Bureau after presenting it with allegations of truck safety violations.
