ENGINEERING ANALYSIS OF SHORTFALL FOR NEW TECHNOLOGIES. ANALYSIS MEMORANDUM
The engineering principles that govern the mpg performance of alternative technologies on the EPA test procedure and under in-use conditions are examined. The results can be used to interpret the shortfall of alternative technologies derived from statistical analyses. The analysis examines each of the four technologies in comparison to the conventional technology counterpart. Manual transmissions are compared to automatics, fuel injected S.I. engines to carburetted S.I. engines, front-wheel drive vehicles to rear-wheel drive vehicles and diesel engines to carburetted S.I. engines. The changes in shortfall of the four technologies in comparison to conventional technologies are explained through differences in responses to the factors. (ERA citation 09:037859)
