Decentralization of cities has often found them ill-served by existing transit systems which consist of radial routes converging on the central business district (CBD). If transit is to gain a share of a large and expanding non-CBD travel market, it must be designed to center of a few strategically located suburban destinations. This bibliography presents a framework for planning a transit system that could serve the needs of the polycentric city effectively. The dispersed activity centers should each have a transit center where there is a high level of synchronized service, the focal point of transit activity fot a sub-region of a metropolitan area from which patrons can readily reach almost any destination in the region. The planning is concerned with selecting the number and location of centers, fixing subregional boundaries, and developing travel patterns and appropriate services. A series of transit center concepts are shown in diagrams. The bibliography contains 75 citations.
