ALTERNATIVE FUELS FOR BUSES: CURRENT ASSESSMENT AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES

This report examines the issue of alternative fuels for transit buses from the perspective of the 1980's and beyond. In a time when federal involvement in alternative fuel development is of lessened significance and market place actions seem of greater value than government intervention or investment, it is relevant to examine the objectives of developing diesel fuel alternatives for public transportation vehicle use. Four fuel groups are evaluated: alcohols, vegetable oils, methane (or natural gas) and hydrogen. An assessment of current development status is provided and conclusions regarding future research efforts are presented.
