COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TURBULENCE MODELS FOR BOUNDARY LAYERS AND WAKES
In recent times a great number of computer models of turbulence has been applied to a variety of turbulent flow problems, with greatest emphasis on boundary layers. The purpose of this report is to investigate several of these models that typify the various classes of models with the view of applying them to more general flow situations. The mathematical form of the solution near discontinuities in boundary conditions is worked out for several models, following Goldstein's analysis for laminar flows. Numerical solutions for compressible and incompressible flows are presented for the boundary layer on a flat plate and for the incompressible wake of a flat plate, and compared with experimental data. The report concludes by modifying the models of Glushko and of Cebeci and Smith to allow computation of free shear layers. (Modified author abstract)
