A SURVEY OF BRIDGE EXPANSION JOINTS FOR SCANDINAVIA
NORDISKE ERFARINGER MED FUGEKONSTRUKTIONER TIL BROER
There are now on the market a considerable number of bridge expansion joints with very different functional criteria. Therefore, a strong wish has emerged to reach a common range of expansion joints in Nordic countries. Through intensive studies by a working group, Committee No. 61--Bridges and Ferries--has surveyed the use of and experience gained from various types of bridge expansion joints under different conditions. The work has been divided into two: up to 1981 an initial survey gathered the experience gained with all types of joint that had been used during the last 10-15 years. Thereafter, a more detailed evaluation was carried out but limited only to the most promising types of joint. This study was completed in June 1983, but the information given is correct as per January 1984. Both the initial survey and the detailed evaluation are given in the appendices. Based on these surveys the report recommends certain types and makes of expansion joint which reasonably fulfil the demands put forward. By making the results available to owners, consulting engineers and manufacturers, it is expected that better future selection and further development of expansion joints be achieved. (TRRL)
