THE USE OF ROUNDABOUTS IN NORDIC COUNTRIES

RUNDKJOERINGER

The report deals with research into and current use of roundabouts in Nordic countries. Geometric design, safety (including problems with pedestrian and bicycle crossings) and traffic flow at roundabouts are discussed. Various examples of roundabouts are shown, and a special chapter deals with the future use of roundabouts. Sweden has a relatively high number of large roundabouts, while in Norway there is an increasing number of small ones based on newer English standards. In Finland, there is a negative attitude to roundabouts compared to thee other Nordic countries. In Denmark, the large number of cyclists creates a problem in the use of roundabouts. In all roundabouts, with the exception of some in Norway and Finland, the traffic on the roundabout has the right of way. The report indicates that safety and traffic flow on roundabouts is very good. The small roundabouts based on English models are particularly interesting, due to the small areas needed. In general roundabouts should be considered where safety, capacity or excessive speed is the problem. However certain conditions like area availability, type of roads and distribution of traffic will determine if a roundabout is suitable. Special attention should also be paid to intersections with many cyclists or a great number of pedestrians. (Author/TRRL)
