A SURVEY OF BRIDGE BEARINGS

Bridge bearings transfer forces from the superstructure of the bridge to the substructure, or between different elements of the superstructure. Additionally they permit the necessary relative movements of the bridge due to traffic loads, changes in temperature, shrinkage and creep of concrete, and settlement of the foundations. The trend during the last decades towards ever increasing bridge lengths and heavier traffic, has resulted in bridge bearings having to accommodate large concentrated loads and movements. On the market there are now a considerable number of bridge bearings with very different functional criteria. Through intensive studies by a working group, Committee No 61--Bridges and Ferries, has surveyed the use of and experience gained from various types of bearings under different conditions. Both advantages and drawbacks are listed. The report concludes that there are no large problems with modern bridge bearings when properly installed and embedded in mortar. (Author/TRRL)
