APPLICATIONS OF ROAD DATA BANKS IN THE NORDIC COUNTRIES

The examples given are of current interest to the road authorities. They concern: traffic safety, planning of rehabilitation, pavement maintenance, transport planning, long term planning, budget simulation, street data bank. Traffic safety will always be a theme of current interest in the road sector while the aim of the activity is directed from construction of new roads towards rehabilitation and maintenance. As the highway administration services think of themselves more and more as a service activity in the transport sector, new needs emerge, e.g. for transport planning systems in relation to information and consulting activities for road users. In times of scarce resources, it is important to consider alternative lines of development, e.g. by the long term planning of the road policies of a country or by simulating the road budget of a local authority. Chapter 3 gives an overview of the road and traffic information in the road data banks of each of the Nordic countries. (Author/TRRL)
