STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE AND DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE ROAD CONSTRUCTIONS AND ASPHALT OVERLAYS

The development of a structural performance and design system for flexible road construction and asphalt concrete overlays is described. In this overall system, five subsystems are identified: (1) design and performance of flexible road construction; (2) visual condition surveys and planning of maintenance; (3) deflection testing and analysis, assessment of remaining structural life and future permanent deformation; (4) fracture and crack growth characteristics of asphalt concrete mixes and (5) design of asphalt concrete overlays. It is pointed out that the development of each subsystem is based on theoretical analyses of layered pavement systems, field observations on the structural behaviour of in service pavements, and a characterization of the cracking behaviour of asphalt concrete mixes. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are given. (TRRL)
