BEARING CAPACITY NEAR THE ROAD EDGE
BAERIGHET NAERA VAEGKANTEN
Traffic on narrow roads where the edges have inadequate lateral support may cause unacceptable wheeltracking near the edges. Tests have been made to see if, under favourable conditions, it is possible to achieve satisfactory compaction and bearing capacity near the edges with the methods and rollers in common use. The tests comprised density, bearing capacity and compaction measurements on the sub-base and base, measurement of track depth in the base after several passes with an articulated lorry of maximum weight, and measurement of changes in side slope. Density measurements showed satisfactory compaction right up to the edge. The degree of compaction in the sub-base and base varied between 92 and 98% Proctor after 6 passes of the roller. Bearing capacity exhibited a slight decrease near the edges. The modulus of elasticity of the base varied between 102 n/mm2 near the edge and 118 n/mm2 at 2 m from the edge. Track depth after 20 passes of the lorry showed some increase towards the edges. When the outer rear wheel was 0.25 m from the edge, the outer track was 14 mm deep and the track near the centre 10 mm deep. (TRRL)
