STANDARD DEDUCTION MADE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DETERMINATION OF BLOOD ALCOHOL CONTENT

AVDRAGET VID BESTAEMNING AV PROMILLEHALT I BLODPROV

The object was to determine if the present deduction of 0.014% from all blood alcohol contents is statistically justified. All reports relating to 1981 were analysed. For each report, the mean value and variance were calculated for the four independent analysis. The mean variance was also calculated for all reports within a certain blood alcohol interval (0.05-0.059%, 0.06-0.069%, etc). The analysis shows that the variance is not constant. It is higher in blood samples with a high alcohol content than in samples with a low content. The deduction made from alcohol contents should not, as now, be constant but should vary with the mean value of the analytical results. It should be 0.005 percentage points for contents of 0.05-0.059% and 0.008 percentage points for contents of 0.15-0.159% in order that the final content should be compatible with the measurement error in the analytical method. However, in such a case the present maximum difference of 0.025% between the lowest and highest analytical results must be cut to 0.015%. For an alcohol content of 0.15-0.159%, however, the maximum difference of 0.025% is appropriate. (TRRL)
