PILOT STUDY OF FOUR CATALYTIC CONVERTERS FOR A DIESEL LORRY

PILOTUNDERSOEKNING AV FYRA AVGASKATALYSATORER PAA EN DIESELDRIVEN LASTBIL

Four types of catalytic converters were tested on a diesel lorry. 1 pellet type converter of 15 dm3 volume in commercial production and 3 monolithic converters of 3.5, 3.5 and 7 dm3 volume respectively which were prototypes. The lorry was driven on a test rig according to four different driving patterns. Discharges of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, formaldehyde, PAH, nitro-PAH and particulate emissions were measured. Mutagenicity tests on bacteria were also carried out. The tests showed that the catalytic converters (1) reduced carbon monoxide emissions. (2) reduced hydrocarbon emissions, (3) did not significantly change the emission of oxides of nitrogen, (4) promoted conversion of nitrous oxide to nitric oxide (3 converters), (5) did not significantly affect emissions of formaldehyde apart from one converter in which an increase occurred, (6) reduced emission of PAH, (7) reduced emission of nitro-PAH, (8) reduced the mutagenicity of emissions except in one case where there was no significant drop. The above results refer to an almost new vehicle and new converters. General conclusions regarding other types of diesel engine or converters used over a longer period cannot be drawn. (TRRL)
