THE USE OF ALCOHOL BY DRIVERS. REPORT OF A RESEARCH INTO DRINKING AND DRIVING BEHAVIOUR OF DUTCH DRIVERS, CARRIED OUT IN AUTUMN 1981

ALCOHOLGEBRUIK ONDER AUTOMOBILISTEN. VERSLAG VAN EEN ONDERZOEK NAAR DE RIJ EN DRINKGEWOONTEN VAN NEDERLANDSE AUTOMOBILISTEN, UITGEVOERD IN HET NAJAAR VAN 1981

During autumn 1981 the Dutch Institute for Road Safety Research SWOV carried out research into the driving and drinking behaviour of drivers. This research, the first carried out at SWOV since 1977, has the main purpose of testing a new procedure by which research testing is combined with police enforcement and detection activities. The alcocontrol used by the police was tested for accuracy and reliability. The alcocontrol gave little reliable information on the real blood alcohol content as compared with the intoxilyzer. Results from the research in 1977 and 1981 did not show great differences. Comparison of the results of this research and the activities of the police show that the police can detect four times more drivers with a BAC of over 0.5 promille if they use the new a-select procedure and make use of an equipment which is as accurate and reliable as the intoxilyzer.
