THE CONSTRUCTION AND INITIAL RESULTS OF A SMALL-SCALE ROAD EXPERIMENT (JUNE 1983) TO EVALUATE THE PERFORMANCE OF GRAVELS IN SURFACE DRESSINGS

The report gives details of a small-scale surface dressing experiment on the N20 at Mallow, Co. Cork, The experiment was carried out as a followup to an investigation of surface dressing failures in the area that occurred in the winter (1982/1983) following their application. The specific objectives were to compare the performance of local gravels with crushed stone and to study the effect of nominal stone size and binder application rate. Details are given of the small-scale technique by which 34 sections approximately 1 M wide were laid across the width of one traffic lane and the standard test properties of the materials used are also documented. The condition of surface dressings after one week was assessed by a panel of experienced engineers using a widely accepted visual inspection technique. Chipping losses occurred from some sections during the first week due to heavy rainfall; the degree of chipping loss associated with the binder application rate, stone type, and chipping size is recorded.
