In the coming two or three five-year plans it is estimated that 200-250 new cities will be built in the Soviet Union. Brezhnev emphasized this on the USSR's 50th anniversary, mentioning the huge importance of new construction sites such as the Krasnoyer hydroelectric power plant, the Kenakovsky state regional electric power station, and the great automobile enterprises on the banks of the Volga and the Kama rivers. These new cities fall into the heavy industry, mechanical engineering, mining industry, and scientific-production types. This book is intended for architects, economicst, and technical engineering workers of planning organizations. The new cities aren't simply built to house the population but must answer to the newest levels of social, scientific, technical, and economic development. Discusses in their interdependent aspects are technical-economic, architectural layout, and transportation engineering problems and methods of planning. The main chapter categories are the general plans, distribution development in group systems, formation of economic bases, analy is of territory for construction, schematics for initial construction, etc., and included among the more specific sections are such topics as engineering equipment (e.g., water and energy supply), maintenance and service systems, city traffic and transport, distribution and structure of the industrial zone (as well as of the populated zone), climatic conditions, etc. The illustrations which abound throughout the book include such topics as the distribution of the new cities throughout the entire U.S.S.R. their population distributions, and the division of work, rest, and play in the individual city.
