NEW TOWN TRANSPORT TASK STUDY

The prime objective of this study has been to examine transport/land use system parameters for a new town in order to provide standards and performance criteria within planning of a transport system, without cars, can be undertaken. Secondly, a framework and guideline to enable the evaluation of alternative transport plans which might be considered appropriate to a new town of the order of 200,000 population. The two main phases included historical data studies which were analyzed to establish broad standards of performance for transport systems in Australian cities. The second phase of the study has been aimed at testing the sensitivity of transport system operations to changes in urban structure, in particular the location and density of residential and employment centers, and to changes in actual transport system operating characteristics. It was concluded that city planning should be closely integrated with the planning of public transport services.
