DEVELOPMENT OF A STANDARD DRIVING CYCLE FOR FAIRBANKS, ALASKA
This report covers one facet of the work that the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has supported on the air pollution-automotive emissions problems in Fairbanks and Anchorage. The results provide on more piece of technical information that helps to increase our understanding of the cause and effect of carbon monoxide and other pollutants generated by vehicles. The results of this study indicate that the difference between a typical Fairbanks driving cycle and the California cycle used by the Environmental Protection Agency is not large enough to affect the results of the Federal Test Procedure for determining automotive emissions (within the uncertainty of the test). The study also suggests that an Anchroage driving cycle, if developed, would compare similarly. Implementation of the results of this study is currently underway, since the results are part of the technical information used to justify and plan auto inspection/maintenance programs for Fairbanks and Anchorage. These programs are now in their early stages, with start-ups planned for mid-1985. (Author)
