ENERGY CONSERVATION BY IMPROVEMENT OF VEHICLE TECHNIQUES AND DRIVING BEHAVIOUR
BRANDSTOFBESPARING DOOR VERBETERING VAN DE VOERTUIGTECHNIER EN HET BESTUURDERSRIJGEDRAG
An assessment of possibilities for energy conservation for cars and lorries is presented. The savings can arise by improvement of the vehicle technique and those aspects which can be influenced by the driver such as driving behaviour and maintenance. The author attempts to show that value of these savings. The influence which these fuel savings of cars and their drivers can have on energy consumption in the Netherlands can be calculated in two ways. This calculation is applicable with government measures as well as without them. From these calculations it is shown that the total energy consumption by cars could decrease by different measures in 1985 to 16.7% and in 1990 to 29.7% as compared to 1978. Recommendations are presented for governmental policy on energy conservation. The most important are: publicity campaigns, mandatory vehicle inspection and maintenance and education in economical driving. (TRRL)
