RATIONALIZATION OF COMMODITY DISTRIBUTION IN WHOLESALE BUSINESS STREET

Since 1955 the Japanese economy has expanded rapidly. At the present rate of growth by 1980 freight transportation by land will reach the utmost limit of the present transportation system. This report, taking the synthetic wholesale business center Kuturin street in Tokyo as a model, aimed to investigate and to solve some of the existing problems of wholesale districts. Kuturin street, the center of synthetic material wholesale district, is located in Tokyo's business center: Nihon-Bashi. In order to establish the present relationship between wholesale businesses and trucking firms, questionnaires were sent out. The results showed that there were little attempts to coordinate collection and delivery trips either by items, by routes, or by districts. Consequently, this ineffective transportation pattern added extra burden to the already congested Nihon-Bashi traffic. The immediate recommendation of the investigating committee is to coordinate and centralize delivery and collection. The ultimate recommendation is to relocate wholesale districts in an area where there is room for adequate loading and unloading facilities, better storage space, and easier access to the highways.
