PIARC XVII WORLD ROAD CONGRESS, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, OCTOBER 8-15 1983. TECHNICAL COMMITTEE REPORT ON ROADS IN URBAN AREAS

This report deals with four topics of important aspects of urban highways: (1) detailed facilities for two wheeled vehicles and pedestrians, their environmental impacts and an assessment of their safety (facilities for cyclists, slow traffic in residential areas, facilities for pedestrians); (2) traffic control strategies in urban areas for comprehensive traffic management and especially for prevention of congestion, communications with drivers, assistance to and monitoring of public transport, increase of safety, improvement of the environment); (3) orientation in the urban street network (signs, markings and traffic signals)--systems for vehicles and pedestrians, technical and construction characteristics, visibility by day and night, environmental problems; design of the urban bus street network (special streets for buses, bus lanes, buses at intersections, bus stops).
