The various chapters of this report can be divided into three categories: a) chapters concerning energy conservation and maintenance strategies (cost and energy considerations in relation to pavement surface characteristics; surface characteristics and the development of maintenance policies); b) chapters concerning environmental protection and the safety of users (tyre-road contact noise; visual perception of the roadway and its surroundings by the road user); c) chapters concerning specific problems (surface characteristics of permeable bituminous surfacing; surface characteristics of airfield runways; special problems such as surfaces for cycle tracks and pedestrian paths, anti-kerosene surfaces, studded tyres).
