This paper discusses Mexico's 15-year experience with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of rural roads. The socio-economic and geographical background to the programme is examined. The evolution in the rural road programme since 1968 is briefly reviewed, and the most commonly used technologies in Mexico are outlined. The criteria used for selecting technologies for specific projects are mentioned. Details are given of the most relevant specifications for rural roads currently built in Mexico. (TRRL)
