PIARC XVII WORLD ROAD CONGRESS, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, OCTOBER 8-15 1983. QUESTION II: GENERAL REPORT ON CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF PAVEMENTS
An examination is presented of the national reports on: (a) general questions (development of techniques since the congress of Vienna, influence on pavements of the characteristics of heavy vehicles, progress in the operational assessment of pavement quality, taking into account considerations of rumbling noise, rolling resistance and photometric qualities, waste products, by-products, fringe materials, use of artificial aggregates, impact of earthquakes and floods on the design concept of pavements, frost problems, and road materials and their impact); (b) flexible pavements (strategies for pavement construction and maintenance, assessment of long-term behaviour of traditional techniques for wearing courses, base courses, roadbases and subbases, behaviour of pavement surfacings in winter conditions, modified binders and additives, use of cold-mix binders, new types of materials for wearing courses and base courses, subbases and road bases either untreated or treated with bituminous binders, recycling and restoration of flexible pavement materials, equipment and manufacture for implementation); (c) concrete pavements (design and behaviour in service, components and properties of concrete, construction and control methods, maintenance and strengthening, subbases and road bases treated with hydraulic binders). The progress made is reviewed together with the points which can be considered as established. Unresolved problems and desirable research are outlined. (TRRL)
