COMPARISON OF VEHICLE USE DATA BASES: ANALYSIS MEMORANDUM
The US Department of Energy currently is developing two new data bases to provide information on motor vehicle fuel use and travel in support of its transportation policy analysis. These data bases consist of fuel purchase records maintained by representative samples of US households and permit, for the first time, the study of trends in consumer behavior at a very disaggregate level. This memorandum reviews the vehicle use and fuel economy information in the data bases and discusses the differences in sample composition and fleetwide estimates of monthly VMT and fuel economy.
