EFFECTS OF ROAD TRAFFIC ON THE ENVIRONMENT

L'ATTEINTE A L'ENVIRONNEMENT DUE AU TRAFFIC

This report gives a quantitative comparison of the negative effects on the environment caused by different types of transportation and road traffic in general. These negative effects have to be related to uniform levels of traffic (passenger-km, tons-km). An adequate unit of measure was adopted: environmental effect per unit of service measurement. This unit of measure did not consider the differences of quality in the level of service. The study determined the energy consumption, air-pollution, noise, accident rate, space requirements of vehicles. The types of transportation was classified according to the effect they have on the environment (from pedestrian to airplanes). The study concludes that goods movement by road has a greater negative effect than people movement. Road transport has an unusually high negative effect; in Switzerland road transport is responsible for 30% - 40% of the negative environmental effects.
