REPORT ON THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF HIGHWAY STRUCTURES FOR THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENTIAL TEMPERATURE. VOLUME 1: FINAL REPORT. VOLUME 2: DRAFT DEPARTMENTAL ADVICE NOTE
The purpose of the investigation reported was to provide guidance for designers of steel, composite and concrete highway bridges as to how to assess the stress effects of differential temperature in the structure. Volume 1, describes the basis of the investigation, the method adopted and the results obtained. Volume 2 contains design guidance incorporating rules which allow stress levels to be derived through the depth of the section when the bridge is subjected to temperture profiles as specified in BS 5400 part 2. The guide lines do not cover the effects of differential temperature across the deck of bridges nor through towers, piers or cables. Reference is made to work carried out at the transport and Road Research Laboratory, Crowthorne, Berkshire. (TRRL)
